Medical Engineering - Master

About the course

The main goal of education in the field of Medical Engineering (ME) is to prepare highly qualified and broadly skilled specialists with a solid general engineering background and in-depth knowledge of medical technology. These specialists should be capable of researching and developing devices, mechanisms, instruments, or other objects related to medical technology. They should also be able to carry out activities aimed at optimizing and improving the characteristics of existing devices, as well as creating and implementing new devices, instruments, facilities, or other objects related to medical engineering.

Graduates of the Medical Engineering specialty will be engaged in managerial and operational activities required for the successful participation of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Single European Market. This includes ensuring compliance with European and global safety and quality requirements for medical products designed and/or manufactured by Bulgarian companies.

Graduates in Medical Engineering will be leading experts in the country in the development and application of principles, methods, and means for metrological assurance, certification, testing, and evaluation of the safety and quality of medical devices, as defined by international, European, and national regulatory frameworks - legislative acts and standards.

Why choose this specialty?

Young engineering professionals who graduate from this master's program acquire a solid foundation of knowledge necessary for future engineering and scientific activities, providing them with the required professional flexibility. Education encompasses the physical, biomedical, and technical aspects of medical technology. Throughout their training, students gain in-depth knowledge of contemporary materials and methods used in the design of medical engineering products. Emphasis is placed on measurements in medicine, regulations and standards, technical provision, quality, and safety.

The specialization offers specializations in two modules:

  • Electromedical Technology.
  • Technical Support, Legislation, and Standardization for Medical Technology.

The specialty of Medical Engineering is unique to Bulgaria and is based on the extensive experience of the Technical University of Sofia in this field. The teaching staff consists of professors from leading faculties such as the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies, the Faculty of Industrial Technology, the Faculty of Automatics, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and licensed guest lecturers.

What are the entry requirements?

Graduates with a bachelor's or master's degree in professional fields: 5.1 Mechanical Engineering; 5.2 Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Automation; 5.3 Communication and Computer Engineering; and 5.13 General Engineering.

Graduates from other disciplines within the field of Technical Sciences undergo compensatory training.

What do you study?

The education of the master's degree program in Medical Engineering is built upon the knowledge and skills acquired during undergraduate studies in the following groups of disciplines: fundamental, general engineering, specialized engineering, and humanities.

Engineers specializing in Medical Engineering with a master's degree qualification are expected to solve complex managerial and operational tasks. To perform this highly skilled activity, interdisciplinary academic education is necessary, covering knowledge in the following areas:

  • Engineering sciences: materials and technologies, design, research, implementation, and servicing of medical technology, metrological assurance, and quality control.
  • Economic sciences: economics, marketing, project management, human resources, business communications, etc.
  • Information sciences: information provision, automation, and computer control.
  • Social and legal sciences: technical legislation of the European Union and the Republic of Bulgaria, standardization, legal metrology.

Opportunities for student mobility

  • Technical University received the Erasmus University Charter (EUC), which provides the general framework for European cooperation in higher education.
  • Erasmus+ finances student mobility for training and/or internships at foreign universities/companies, as well as activities related to the transnational mobility of academic and administrative staff and various projects.
