The Department of "Engineering Design" began its development in 1968, when on the territory of VMEI "V. I. Lenin" the "Laboratory of ergonomics, engineering psychology and industrial aesthetics" is opened. In 1974 the laboratory grew into the "Central Scientific and Research Laboratory of Ergonomics, Engineering Psychology and Industrial Aesthetics" (CNIIL under EIPPE).
In 1982 "Center for training and upgrading the qualification of engineering-pedagogical personnel" is opened, which includes the "Central Research Laboratory for Ergonomics, Engineering Psychology and Industrial Aesthetics".
In 1983 a second specialty "Engineering Ergonomics and Industrial Design" (IEPP) was founded, and in the academic year 1985/86. the first batch of students, specializing in "Engineering ergonomics and design", was accepted.
In 1985 TsNIL became the "Engineering ergonomics and industrial design" department, and in 1989 by order of the Rector, the department was renamed the "Ergonomics and Design" department (ED).
In 1991 the Faculty of Economics was founded, which includes the "Ergonomics and Design" department. In the academic year 1993/94, the major was renamed "Engineering ergonomics and design".
The following year (1995), the "Engineering Ergonomics and Design" department was merged with the "Economics", "Patent-Licensing Activity and Humanities" departments into the "Humanities and Design" department.
In 1997 the "Engineering Design" specialty is opened, full-time study (SG, No. 8/21.01.1998) and the first graduating class of bachelors is accepted.
